SPOILER ALERT! Do non read unless you accept seen the series finale of Dexter: New Blood.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So this is the ending you wanted, right? You lot always wanted Dexter to dice?

CLYDE PHILLIPS: If y'all're referring to what I had said previously nearly the stop of season eight, aye (Phillips had wanted to kill Dexter off once the serial concluded on Showtime simply he left later on flavor 4). Had I been in charge of the show and had I washed that, we wouldn't be talking now. Thank God I wasn't in that location and thank God they didn't practice it considering I had an amazing couple of years doing this.

At present we tin talk fully and candidly about that initial meeting that you had with Michael C. Hall most bringing the show back! Did you immediately pitch that Dexter would die and it would exist at the hands of Harrison?

Let me think nigh that 'cause it was ii and a one-half years ago, believe it or not. It was at the beginning of July of 2019 when I spoke with him. I believe that we did talk over that he would die and there was actually only ane way for him to die. In that location was nobody else, actually. I remember information technology would've been unsatisfying if anybody else killed Dexter.

Nosotros definitely wanted Jennifer. David's graphic symbol Affections Batista grew out of the writers' room when everybody saw them sitting effectually talking most what'due south best for the story.

Was in that location anything that came up in the writer'south room that you lot didn't initially set out to do?

Well, nosotros had to work on the big bad in a big way. The Clancy Brown character, Kurt Caldwell, grew and grew until nosotros had i of the most gruesome and brutal scenes I've ever washed. I'm talking well-nigh his surreptitious lair with all of the women'south bodies preserved forever. I've never seen that before.

Harrison made a really good point in the final scene with his dad when he said, 'I idea you only killed the bad guys.' Yet Dexter killed Logan (Alano Miller). Did you lot wrestle with that idea?

Information technology was organic to the story. Dexter had to get out of the police force station. He was in a lot of trouble. Dexter cleverly gear up it up so he got Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) out of the police station because of her missing persons' situation. That left him alone with Logan. Logan was the last obstruction for him to get out of there.

It was bully when Dexter's remembered all the players from his by.

Harrison says 'open your eyes and look at what yous've done,' which is a callback to the first episode always of Dexter many years ago. There are a lot of Easter eggs in these episodes. Nosotros combed through footage to find the about appealing, innocent, vulnerable people to make it seem like what Dexter had done is even more than heinous. Because if it weren't for Dexter and his ways, those people would not have been killed.

The finale was blissfully tidy. It felt like you answered a lot of questions.

The intent was to tell a consummate story. It's no surreptitious that the 8th season was very unpopular and dissatisfying to the fans. I wanted the audience to feel as if we had completed the story. I guess I was striving for redemption, not in whatsoever religious sense. I just wanted to redeem the testify for the audience and ship it off with something that we're proud of instead of something that we'd take to make excuses for.

Equally soon as you presented Harrison, nosotros were thinking, 'oh my God, they're gonna spin it off. They're setting up Harrison every bit the next evolution of the Morgan family.' But afterwards seeing that finale, maybe that's non the plan afterward all?

I am open to the possibility. I've been with Showtime forever. I did the commencement four seasons of Dexter and the concluding three seasons of Nurse Jackie. Showtime is family. I'm open to the possibility if they wanna pursue it merely there are no plans at the moment for that. Jack Alcott is a bang-up thespian. He took wrestling lessons. He took baseball lessons. He took chopping forest lessons, fighting lessons. He was a not bad spirit. We had to shoot out of social club because we had to hunt the weather. We e'er needed snow. There's a scene where he'due south in therapy with Dexter. We purposely did that before to requite him and Michael C. Hall a risk to actually react to each other, to get to know each other. By the fourth dimension information technology was over, Jack was ready to play the terminate of the series. We shot that in the outset month. We needed the snowfall!

That was quite a moment in the terminate when Dexter holds his sister's manus, only and then she pulls away. He so reaches for her, to no avail.

That was Jennifer'southward idea. We talked about that entire scene for a long time. When you lot shoot and kill somebody, what's the torso position? You don't desire him to look like too much of an angel. Then Michael came upward with this cantankerous leg thing and information technology was perfect.

Information technology was rather sad to say cheerio to Dexter. How was it for you?

I only watched it this morning. I was crying again. It just destroys me. There's a lot of me in there. I wrote it with a pen filled with blood. It was very emotional for me.
