A historic Victorian villa's Scandi-style renovation
A historic abode needed an interior designer's touch to bring it up to speed with this family's lifestyle.

Who lives hither: Sarah and Bruce Carter; and their daughter, Moo, 23; and son, Maccie, 18. Their eldest son, Max, moved out 2 years ago. They too have a labrador named Maysie.
Style of home: A well-preserved four-bedroom Victorian belongings in Melbourne's Hawthorn East.
Timeline: After a series of smaller changes over a menses of 20 years, the habitation was completed with a five-calendar month renovation in 2015.

Marble fireplaces, elegant plasterwork and a copper boiler in the laundry were some of the original features that greeted Sarah and Bruce, when they found this beautifully preserved Victorian villa more than xx years ago.
Open-plan living The impressive Rosetta Santucci painting is a focal point of this space, while the Coco Flip light counters the MDF timber-panelled wall. Artek 'Paw Grenade' pendant lights offer focused lighting over the island bench. A timber veneer-clad built-in unit houses the cooking expanse and conceals the butler's pantry. The couple were living close by with two kids and wanted a habitation with space to grow. This house ticked all the boxes: its structure and outdoor space offered potential to expand. Information technology's no surprise that their ten-yr plan turned into a much longer stay.
Brilliant idea Frame up graphic lines of a fireplace with well-baked white tiles, like these handmade subway tiles from Bespoke Tile & Rock By Earp Bros. They're easy to keep soot-gratuitous and give the space a handcrafted feel.

Fast-forrad to the present and both the family unit and the house have seen considerable change, non to mention the addition of son Maccie and Maysie the labrador. Sarah and Bruce continued to preserve and revamp the original office of the house, adding modern aspects including a pool and an extension, as well equally a major overhaul in 2015, during which the family moved out and rented nearby for five months.

"What started as a unproblematic project to update and extend the kitchen evolved into a huge re-jig of the master living areas and upgrade to the residual of the rooms," says Sarah. "The all-time corner of the house had been devoted to the laundry and the northern light was beingness ignored, so we realised we'd have to totally rework the layout to attain our ultimate goal – a spacious kitchen and dining surface area overlooking the garden."

The formal forepart door opens onto a gracefully arched hallway leading to the bedrooms, all spread beyond a single storey. Follow the original floorboards and you arrive at the open-plan extension, where the light-filled kitchen overlooks the courtyard through steel-framed doors. The remodelling of these internal spaces was interior designer Fiona Austin's thought. She challenged the couple to expand their vision of what was possible.
Kitchen An elegant Hub Furniture tabular array is flanked by Carl Hansen & Søn 'CH33' chairs by Hans J. Wegner to create a formal space. Black Ventech cabinetry and Elton Group oak veneer cupboards capture the relaxed expect that Sarah wanted to reach. "I dear how the black ties in with the pendant lights and steel-framed doors," says Sarah.

"Space planning is often underestimated in what it can bring to the livability of a space," she says. "No affair what Sarah and Bruce tried with furnishings and small renovations, they couldn't make the main areas work for modernistic living."
Butler'south pantry Another triumph is the concealed butler's pantry with ii long benches and cubbyhole shelving for easy access to essentials. Chaos and clutter is hidden behind the black timber door that leads to this busy zone, bringing a sense of calm to the living spaces.

When Fiona returned with a plan for their perfect kitchen, the couple were shocked to run across it had been relocated and a sitting room was in its place. The laundry was to become a report, while the old bathroom became a butler'southward pantry.

While Sarah and Bruce could run into the reward of reworking the main living areas, the idea of transforming a pocket-sized study into a walk-in robe and ensuite took some convincing. "Y'all become quite subjective when it comes to rethinking your dwelling and we thought nosotros were stuck with a format nosotros couldn't change," says Sarah.
Hallway This elegant arch stays true to the history of the dwelling, framed by intricate moulded plasterwork.

The event is a masterstroke of clever and artistic thinking, not only for the meaty pattern, just too for the resale potential. "Having an ensuite is quite a revelation," says Sarah, "particularly when sharing a house with young adults."
Ensuite A neutral palette sets a calming tone in the ensuite, while the same herringbone tiles and blackness-framed mirrors from the family bathroom create a sense of harmony between the two spaces.

One aspect of the renovation the couple were set on was the interior style. Later on a stay in Sweden's Ett Hem hotel, Sarah was inspired past Scandinavian aesthetics and was keen to evoke this mix of beauty and functionality. "The hotel'southward design resonated with me, non but because I'thousand a huge fan of designer Ilse Crawford, but for the bold use of gimmicky furniture and lighting within such a celebrated building," says Sarah.
Moo's bedroom Soft pinks and greys give Moo's infinite a distinctly feminine look. The unfussy Jardan 'Leila' bed adds structure alongside cascading drapes.

The resounding European influences throughout the open spaces of Sarah and Bruce's home can exist seen from the timber-clad wall separating the study, to the steel-framed doors and herringbone oak parquetry flooring.
Bathroom The Artedomus 'Ottocento' bath echoes the heritage of the home and is highlighted past the 'Herringbone Bianco Carrara' tiles from Bespoke Tile & Stone Past Earp Bros. A Porcelain Deport 'Cloche' pendant light and Catalano basin from Rogerseller create a contemporary feel.

Elsewhere, vibrant light-green SuperTuft carpet adds warmth in the lower sitting area and the bedrooms, linking the original business firm and the new living spaces. "I'm a big fan of dark-green and I wanted to bring a punchy colour into the firm without painting the walls," says Sarah. "Every bit the rooms are so generous, this house can accept a deep base colour, simply I've since seen rich blue and purple carpets that I love." Perhaps the renovations haven't finished yet?
Bathroom "Nosotros've been conscientious to use materials that complement the original features in the house, such as the carrara marble in the bathrooms and kitchen that mirrors the one-time fireplaces," says Sarah.

Lessons learnt "Reworking the layout was a huge leap of faith for the states," says Sarah, "Withal, shifting the orientation of the living spaces has created a much better outlook over the garden and changed the way we live and entertain, bringing information technology up to speed with contemporary living."
